Gerwig has become known for creating an environment where her female characters are more than mere stereotypes, so the character of Velma could be given more layers while having fun with Velma's ultimate personal preference. There is no doubt that Gunn is a talented director but a female approach to the ambiguity that pop culture has given to Velma's sexuality would probably stick the landing a bit better. Gerwig would likely shine with her film version's depiction of Velma. is also behind Barbie, so what they allowed Gerwig to do with that film would bode well if she decided to solve some mysteries with Scooby and the gang. That's not to say that the commentary is sneaky, but it walks a fine enough line that it's not abrasive enough to make the studio nervous. Gerwig's take is flashy in all the right ways to engage the attention of younger moviegoers, but the writing and directing is smart enough that it opens the story up to display blistering commentary. What Gerwig accomplished with Barbie, along with her writing partner Noah Baumbach, is that you can take a brand or IP that caters to kids and flip it on its head to make it also appeal to an older audience. Coming out of the two live-action Scooby-Doo sequels, you do see a bit of a missed opportunity to be more edgy, but the recently released Barbie shows that a live-action Scooby-Doo with more edge is possible today with Gerwig at the helm. It was enough to spawn a sequel that also proved to be successful, albeit less so, with a gross of $181.2 million globally. wasn't technically wrong to go the family route since their $84 million investment went on to gross $275.7 million worldwide. Linda Cardellini's Velma and Gellar's Daphne originally shared an on-screen kiss that was ultimately deleted, and Gunn has also said that there was even an R-rated cut of the movie.
